Why is this camping pad so affordable compared to big brands like Nemo or Thermarest

Because that’s what they’re actually worth. Those pads are functionally the same as name brand ones, but without the huge markup.

It’s crazy how overpriced camping gear can be sometimes.

Camping seems to be the hobby where you spend a fortune to live like you don’t have a home.

Feels like owning a van by the river is becoming a trend.

I would love to have a van by the river.

And after you pay for the van conversion, you might have to.

I have a friend from a developing country who can’t stand camping. He says, ‘I left for a better life, why would I rough it for fun?’ It’s quite funny.

@Storm
I got a camping pad from Decathlon to replace my old sit pad. It’s now a dual-purpose pad. Also, their big self-inflating mat for car camping is excellent. When I had a problem, they replaced it quickly. The gear might not be the lightest, but for the price and their return policy, it’s unbeatable. And I must say, their down jacket is nearly as good as the more expensive brands but at a fraction of the cost.

@Storm
I’m still using some old Coleman gear I picked up for cheap, and it’s held up through some tough weather. Still going strong.

@Storm
Exactly.

Industry discounts like ProDeals make high-end gear more affordable, offering about 40% off regularly.

When a relative worked at Patagonia, we got an incredible discount. It was like buying at cost plus a tiny markup.

I wouldn’t own half the quality gear I have if not for those discounts.

Discounts used to be even better a few years back, sometimes up to 75% off.

@Blair
Arcteryx used to offer 50% off wholesale, which worked out to about 75% off retail, when I worked retail before their quality dropped after being sold.

It’s true, they’re not the same since the buyout.

The brands know outdoor enthusiasts take pride in their gear.

Brands target people who are active in the outdoors because they’re likely to recommend the products they use.

Some people believe spending more can avoid discomfort.
