Which gear impressed you most this year?

Hi everyone,

I’m curious to know if you’ve stumbled upon any hidden gems of gear this year that caught your attention. Whether it’s something brand new or new to you, I’d love to hear about it. Please share what you found and why it stood out to you.

Excited for another year of adventures in 2025!

I tried the Exped Megamat 15. Initially, it was just OK. Once I adjusted the air to the right amount, it became extremely comfortable—too much air makes it feel like a pool float. There’s a fine line, but when you find that sweet spot, it’s perfect.

@Ari
Bought the Exped on sale at REI to use for sleeping in my car. After 10+ nights, I still have mixed feelings. It’s definitely a quality pad, much better than other air mattresses, including the Luno mattress. But I previously used a 6-inch foam mattress from Amazon that was more comfortable. So, in terms of comfort, I rate the foam mattress a 10, the Exped a 7. I’m likely switching back to the foam.

@Aman
I once asked in a forum what I was doing wrong with my Megamat because it didn’t feel as comfortable as others claimed. This discussion makes me feel it’s not just me.

@Ari
I’ve heard retail workers say that if you inflate display pads to actual comfortable levels, people misunderstand the firmness when they just squeeze them with their hands. It gives a wrong impression unless you lie on it.

@Ari
Totally agree. I bought one too, and it’s been a game changer for my car camping experiences.

@Ari
It also insulates incredibly well. I didn’t realize how warm I could be until I got my Megamat.

I discovered a wax canvas firewood carrier on Amazon. It’s versatile: I use it for firewood, carrying stones, kneeling, and as a doormat. It’s also handy for laying out gear when packing. Plus, it rolls up small enough to fit anywhere!

@Vale
Do you have a link for it?

Brings back memories of hauling loads of firewood as a kid. Those carriers are tough and very useful.

@Vale
My daughter gave me one last Christmas, and it’s been an excellent addition to my camping gear!

@Vale
Combining one of these with a skateboard makes a cheap and effective wood dolly at campsites with smooth paths.

A few favorites: Kelty Bestie blanket for its comfort and versatility. Flextail Zero pump for easy inflating of my sleeping mat. Big Agnes Diamond Park 30 sleeping bag for its spaciousness and warmth. Also found great deals on used clothes like merino wool hoodies and waterproof jackets on Vinted.

@Miller
The Flextail pump is a lifesaver for inflating sleeping pads!

Absolutely, it almost gets it perfect. Just needs a couple of breaths for final adjustment.

@Miller
Just bought the Bestie blanket on a sale for $18! What a steal.

It’s amazing value for the price. Great for everyday use and easy to clean.

@Miller
Big fan of the Flextail pump too. It’s changed how I set up camp.

Received fireproof gloves as a Christmas gift. Didn’t expect much but they’ve been amazing for handling campfires.
