Is solid alcohol usable in this scenario?

This is suitable for liquid fuels, not for solid fuel or alcohol gel.

Thanks for clarifying.

Essbit stoves, which are quite inexpensive, might be a better option for using the right fuel with the appropriate stove. It’s a pity not to use the Trangia though, as it’s quite a nice piece of gear.

For a cost-effective and smokeless option, you can find methanol at any auto supply store. Look for HEET in the yellow bottle.

I use that too.

Smart choice!

Auto supply stores aren’t common in my country.

@Fern
You might find cleaning alcohol in the cleaning section of supermarkets. It’s often more affordable and available under different names.

I’ll look into that, thank you.

@Fern
Try searching for methylated spirits or any other type of alcohol. Which country are you in?

I’m in China, where auto supply stores are not as prevalent as in the US.

@Fern
You might find denatured alcohol in places that sell paint.

I’ll check that out, thanks.

I also use Heet, the red bottle works well too.

@Wynn
Be cautious with the red bottle as it tends to be sooty. Yellow Heet burns cleaner.

I’ve seen others use the red one without issues. I haven’t tried it myself as I have a large supply of denatured alcohol. I use a titanium alcohol stove, not a Trangia, but it’s similar to the Evernew Titanium sold by Lixada.

@Jo
Adding a little water to your Trangia can reduce soot. Always add water before lighting the fuel.

Interesting tip, I’ll try that out. Thanks!

Methanol works but be careful as it can cause sinus headaches. Ensure good ventilation when using any stove.
