I’m headed up to Kentucky next month with some buddies and going camping for the first time. Looking at temperature patterns it looks like it will be low 50’s during the day and getting right sounds freezing at night. I’m looking at getting some base layers for this trip but I’m a bigger guy and having difficulty finding something. Any other bigger guys (6’3” 250lbs) have a good place to look for comfortable, warm base layers?
I’m about your size and can fit in the Smartwool baselayers as well as the REI merino wool baselayers.
My 6’3 but lighter than you father has some sprayway dornies in M/L (and they go up to XXL) that he’s “dead chuffed” with. Grid fleece instead of wool so can be manhandled in the washing machine a bit more and cheaper.
The merino base layers I purchased from Varusteleka, a Finnish army surplus store with its own clothing line, have been durable and reasonably priced. They come in sizes up to 3x.
I’m only 6’ and 260 but I’ve had luck with the Merino Wool stuff at Costco. Bottoms and top also sold separately so you can mix and match sizes if needed.
6’2", 225, Although they are much more expensive, I have had excellent experience with Cabelas, Smartwool, and FirstLite. Each of these comes in a large, comfy 2xl that looks good beneath everything.
