I’m not a fan of winter camping, so I’ve been passing the time thinking about gear I want to use once it warms up.
Here’s what’s on my list:
A 5-pound refillable propane tank to replace those disposable green bottles. I tried refilling them last year with an adapter, but I could never get them filled all the way.
A lightweight elevated fire pit to save space. Many campgrounds charge $8–$10 a night to rent one, so having my own should save money in the long run.
For bigger purchases, I just ordered The North Face Wawona 6 as my new tent. It’s still in shipping, but I’m really looking forward to using it.
What about you? Any new gear you’re excited to use?
I actually prefer winter camping to summer. It’s quieter and less crowded. Right now, I’m working on sewing a winter hammock setup, and I can’t wait to test it out.

Fewer people, for starters. Busy summer sites are empty in winter. Also, staying warm and comfortable takes more effort, which feels rewarding. Plus, if you explore new areas, it’s easy to retrace your steps by following your footprints back to the car.

Not who you asked, but I sleep so well in a cozy down nest when it’s freezing outside. Sure, eating or going to the bathroom can be a pain, but the sleep is perfect.
It’s more comfort-focused. For example, some of their camping tables look like they belong in a living room, but they’re super functional with built-in stoves or sinks and fold away for easy transport.
I need to upgrade my sleep system. My 0°F bag has lost its insulation over the years, and my cheap foam pads aren’t cutting it anymore. Plus, I’ve been using a blue tarp that’s heavy and inconvenient. Here’s my plan:
Get a bivvy sack (probably Alpkit’s Hunka).
Add a sleeping bag liner.
Upgrade to a self-inflating pad.
Buy a proper camping tarp.
This should cost about $240 and will make my trips way more comfortable.
I just got a new tarp from REI. My car doesn’t have enough space for a full car camping tent, but someone suggested using a tarp as a vestibule for extra comfort if it rains. Also, I picked up a double-burner grill last year but haven’t taken it camping yet. Can’t wait to use all this gear.
