I just paid about $230 for a Big Agnes Tiger Wall UL 2p tent, which I brought with me on a hiking trip with my companion. Though I was eager to try, my thoughts are now conflicted. I’m interested in hearing about non-UL people’s experiences using UL tents.
I had been wearing a North face storm breaker 2 for 7 years and it still works excellent, feels solid and large enough. Simply put, it’s heavy, and I’m the one who normally carries the tent. For the two of us, Tiger Wall was really cramped, and my partner—who is more of a willing participant—didn’t much enjoy the lack of room. I wasn’t sure if I liked it either. Take one person out of tapering patterns such as the Tiger Wall. Try to get the 3p in exchange for it. A two-person tent must be at least fifty inches wide without a taper if I plan to use it for two people.

I have this same tent. It couldn’t do 2p reasonably. two regular sized inflated pads probably will overlap.

Although I don’t use UL tents, I find the Tiger Wall UL2 to be an excellent option for one or two people. with two individuals. Our gear must be kept outside the tent itself, beneath the vestibule, but we have plenty room (5’11 and 5’6").
The semi-freestanding design and the challenge of keeping the vestibule flap out of the way (the tie backs are sort of a pain) are my two main complaints. I’ve had to set up on extremely rocky ground a few occasions, and it’s been challenging to guy out. In those situations, I was able to bind things with rocks that I found.
It also feels so thin that it gives off a delicate vibe. Though I’ve spent more than 30 nights in it and it’s been better now that I got a Tyvek ground cloth for it off of eBay.
Overall, I think the low weight is great and these minor inconveniences are not deal breakers. I’m getting close to 50 years old, therefore I don’t mind spending a little money to cut down on weight.

Thank you for this perspective. I also feel the same about your drawbacks but good to know that you didn’t feel like they were drawbacks.

Since they intend to release a new one, the amount you paid for it was quite amazing.Every UL semi-freestanding tent will be tapered, so it will be a snug fit.
