I’m trying to decide between packing a hatchet or a machete for my solo hiking bug out bag. I’d appreciate any advice on which would be more practical for handling tasks in the wilderness, such as cutting wood or clearing paths.
Go for a folding saw instead.

Yes sir. Seems to be the general consensus here.
I would say bushcraft knife and a folding saw. I have never needed a hatchet. Never needed a machete either. If you’re planning on bushwacking through thick forest, definitely a machete type blade like a parang. As far as building and processing timber, knife and saw. That’s just my opinion. I personally have never used a hatchet for anything. A hand auger is a good piece of kit if you’re doing a bug out bag.

This seems to be the consensus here. Cool. I guess a hatchet just looks cool.
@Zen
This 100%, I train kids in this stuff - axes are semi useless, silky saw and a good solid tang bush knife like Morakniv

This one right here. Retired tree climber. Silky saws are way better than everyone else.
Don’t know what to tell you on a knife.
What’s it for? And what location? For example, depending on where you live impacts your grear. Example of Nevada desert vs Florida swamp.
If you think you need one to chop wood, a hand saw is lighter and works better. Also plenty of fallen wood in the forest.

Aussie bush, but terrain could turn tropical and depending on how far I travel, alpine snow as well.
No. Not really needed.

Ah ok. Yeah that seems to be the consensus.
Good luck bugging out, doubt you’ll live long if you’re asking Reddit for advice.

Lol. Well. Longer than I would without the advice.

Bugout = Yes
Hiking = maybe
Where are you hiking, or is this just a prep? That said, there is something to be said about hiking with your bugout kit so that you train with it…

This is bugout. Will be training hiking with it.
@Valen
Well then, definitely, the only time I didn’t was in Germany because a hatchet was more practical. Otherwise, I’ve always had a Cold Steel machete, and I’ve loved it.

Nice. What model CS machete?
@Valen
