May be a little out of place so apologies but I’m about to get smacked with this hurricane in Florida. I pulled out my sawyer mini that I haven’t touched in about 3 years. I back flushed it and It seems to be flowing fine and clear and I only really used it on two different trips a few years ago on pretty clear mountain streams. Do you guys think it’ll still be fine to use in a pinch? I’m pretty stocked up on water but obviously just want the option.
I wouldn’t rely solely on the mini in the event of flooding. Use it for silt, but if necessary, boil or treat it as well (but don’t). Viruses, which could exist if a water treatment plant has been flooded, are not filtered by Mini. Not to mention other harmful materials. As a backup, how about trying to gather rainwater? Best of luck and be careful!
Definitely! I have some bleach and chlorine to treat, and a couple methods to boil water. Naturally, I sincerely hope that doesn’t happen.
You should be good as long as it’s flowing. If my memory serves me correctly, they are rated for an absurd amount of water—80k liters, maybe—and I’m not making that up. Best of luck and be careful.
Edit: As a last resort, you might try running some water through the filter with a drop of bleach in it to see if there’s any mold or other debris, although that’s doubtful if everything seems to be flowing smoothly.
Thanks! I just redid the suggestions on the website to put a capful of bleach in the squeeze container and squeeze some through the filter and letting it air dry now. I really hope it doesn’t come to me needing it but better safe than sorry!
More like 450,000 litres. So in theory a lifetime. But they’ll get clogged before that.
