I’m planning to get more into car camping and would like to purchase my own equipment rather than borrowing from family. Can anyone recommend a solid and affordable 4-person tent? Thanks in advance!
Consider the Coleman Sun Dome. Just a tip: an N-Person tent usually means it’ll fit N people snugly. For more comfort, you might want to opt for a 6-person tent instead of a 4-person.

The Sundome is great for budget car camping. It’s perfect for two people and a dog, fitting a queen air mattress with some room left for a dog bed.
If you’re not backpacking, go for a larger tent than you think you need. My wife and I upgraded from a 3P tent to a 6P Marmot Limestone. It’s much more comfortable with extra room for gear and movement, plus the added height means we don’t have to hunch over.
Coleman and Ozark Trail are great entry-level brands. Don’t invest heavily in gear until you’re sure you’ll enjoy and use it frequently. I started with these brands and they lasted me 6-10 years before I needed to upgrade.

Most Coleman tents are quite durable and suitable for car camping in fair weather. They’re a bit heavy, but that’s generally not an issue for car camping.
Check out discount sites like Sierra or Steep and Cheap for deals on tents. Since you’re car camping, the brand isn’t as crucial as long as the tent is spacious enough.
Head to Walmart and pick up a 6-person tent for under $100. If you’re not backpacking, these tents will serve you well and are simple to use. Consider even an 8-person for extra space, especially if you have kids.
Coleman is a great start, but if you’re looking for a slight upgrade, check out Kelty. My partner and I have a 4p Kelty tent for car camping that we got at a good price and it’s been excellent.
Start with a budget-friendly Coleman and upgrade as needed. Keep an eye on r/preppersales for deals.
For car camping, I recommend getting a six-person tent rather than a four. The extra interior height will be appreciated.
The Coleman Sundome is great value for money and often on sale. Remember, a tent’s capacity is calculated based on the number of people sleeping side by side with no extra space. Consider what you borrow from your family as a baseline for style, size, and brand.
For a quick and easy setup, consider an instant tent. Brands like Gazelle, CORE, Coleman, and even Ozark Trail offer budget-friendly options.
