Picking expedition sleeping bag!?

I’m choosing an expedition sleeping bag and comparing several options. I’m leaning toward Western Mountaineering for its strong reputation, but I’m also interested in RAB, Cumulus, and Valandre. Here’s my list of contenders for a trip to Greenland (down to -30°C) and a multi-month Arctic Circle expedition, where temps can hit -40°C.

Some notable bags:

  • Western Mountaineering Bison GWS Expedition: 4.63 lbs, -40°C rated, 850+ fill power down.
  • RAB Expedition 1400: 4.56 lbs, -40°C, 850 fill power.
  • Mountain Equipment Redline: 4.37 lbs, -45°C, 800 fill power.

Any suggestions on other options or experiences with these bags?

acquire the Western Mountaineering if your job allows you to acquire it at wholesale. I own four bags from WM. The ratings for temperature are accurate.

I believe I’ll carry that out:)

How is Feathered Friends not on your list?

It’s -60F for the snowy owl too.

Since you can only order them directly from Feathered Friends, you won’t be able to find them anyplace. However, they ship worldwide. The fact that their bags aren’t carried by big-box stores adds to their appeal in addition to their outstanding craftsmanship.

Uhh Okay thank you! I will look at them then - but I did just get a job at an outdoor store that sells western mountaineering, so I can get those bags to whole sale price
