Need gear recommendations for a larger frame… any advice?

Hey everyone, I’m a college football player at 6’6" and 280 lbs, and I’m struggling to find gear that fits. Most bags advertised as 78" are still 3" too short for me. I’m looking for recommendations on extra-long sleeping bags or quilts, and I’m open to lesser-known brands as well.

Check out the Cabela’s Magnum 44. It’s 44" wide and 90" long. Although it’s not the lightest or most compact, it’s incredibly comfortable. I’m 6’2" and have a bit more bulk, and it fits me perfectly.

I’m also tall and lean at 6’4" and find the Magnum gives me plenty of room to stretch out.

I’m 6’4” too and appreciate the extra space the Magnum offers.

I’m not as tall but also a big guy. I opted for a custom quilt from Enlightened Equipment. You can choose the length, width, temperature rating, material, and fill power. It’s much more comfortable than a standard sleeping bag for me.

I agree. I’m 6’2” and 280 lbs and had a custom Convert made for me by them. It was a bit of a splurge, but it’s been absolutely worth it for the comfort.

You might want to look into the Big Agnes Lost Dog or the Big Agnes Anvil Horn. They offer versions in synthetic and down respectively, and in a long-wide size that should suit your height. They might be discontinued so it’d be wise to move quickly. They’re a bit heavy but offer ample space.

I recommend the Paria Thermodown quilt. They offer a long version that’s 84 inches long. I’m 6’2" and it covers me completely, even over my head on colder nights. It’s held up well for many nights in the Cascades and Olympics since 2019.

Paria’s quilts offer great value. You can use the welcome10 coupon to get 10% off your first order.

Can you confirm the quilt is actually 84" long? The website seems to only list a 78" option for those 5’11” and taller.

What environment are you planning to use this in? What temperature range are you looking for? Do you have a preference between synthetic or down?

I usually ride my dirt bike to remote locations or do some car camping. I’d like the option to backpack as well. I’m not particular about synthetic versus down, though synthetic tends to be more budget-friendly. I’m looking for something comfortable down to about 25°F.

Big Agnes might have a few models that could fit your size.

I’m 6’5" and have found the long version of the Nemo Disco, now called the Endless Promise, fits well. They offer wider models too, which are great for side sleepers like myself. It’s been reliable for both trekking and motorcycle trips.

My fiancé is around your size, 6’6" and 265 lbs, and he swears by his Feathered Friends quilt. It might be worth checking out!

What does playing football have to do with finding a sleeping bag?

It’s more about my build being big but not overly wide. It’s tricky to explain but impacts the kind of gear that fits.

Describing yourself as a football player gives a good idea of the build you’re talking about. It makes perfect sense to me.
