Hey everyone, I’m in the market to upgrade from my old Therm-a-Rest to a foam sleeping pad with a higher R-value. I need it to be foam because I’m quite large and notoriously clumsy—every inflatable pad near me inevitably meets its demise. Thanks for your suggestions!
For car camping, I highly recommend the Exped Megamat. It’s incredibly durable and comfortable.
Although it’s not foam, the Therm-a-Rest Prolite Plus is a self-inflating pad that’s much tougher than traditional air mattresses and should be warm enough for winter.

I have this pad too, and it’s served me very well!

I’ve managed to crush one of those before. I really can’t overstate how much of a bull in a china shop I can be.
Check out the British Army roll mats, they’re about 20 mm thick. I’ve used one for ages. Add some heat reflective foil under it for extra warmth and comfort.
Here are some great high R-value foam pads: Therm-a-Rest Z Lite SOL for lightweight, durable, and reflective warmth, and Nemo Switchback Ultralight Sleeping Pad for compactness and excellent insulation. Let me know if you try one of these!
@Vail
It seems I’m choosing between the Switchback and buying a second one of what I already have. Carrying just one Switchback seems simpler. Thoughts?
If you’re car camping and want something indestructible, consider a Hest.
Therm-a-Rest pads are solid. Check r/preppersales for deals on them.
Exped mats are warm and comfortable—just pick one with a high R-value that fits your needs. I’ve used the SynMat, and it’s the most comfortable pad I’ve slept on.
Stacking two foam pads will double the R-value. Buying a second one might be the easiest solution.
