My family enjoys camping, but we’ve lost or damaged numerous headlamps over the years. Instead of settling for low-quality shared headlamps, I’ve decided to invest in a high-quality one for myself. I enjoyed using a friend’s Black Diamond model, but I’m open to other suggestions that offer comfort, effective lighting, and user-friendly settings.
Black Diamond’s Spot 400-R has been excellent for me. It’s rechargeable, which I find very convenient.

I’ve bought multiple 400 models for my family, opting for the non-rechargeable versions for swapping batteries quickly. They’re simple, have three light modes, and are quite affordable.
@Val
Initially, I was skeptical about the non-replaceable battery, but it’s never been an issue, and the convenience of not handling extra batteries is a bonus.

Black Diamond is definitely a solid choice. I’ve also used a Biolite in a pinch, but I returned to Black Diamond when I found a good deal on a replacement Spot.
@Nyle
Unfortunately, my experiences with Black Diamond have been less favorable, with multiple failures despite warranty replacements.
Brands like Fenix, Olight, Black Diamond, Streamlight, and Nitecore are all great options.
I opted for a Petzl model that accepts AAA batteries or a rechargeable battery. It’s incredibly bright, has a red light setting, and comes with a case that turns it into a lantern. Although the case was an extra expense, it was worth it.
@Jules
You can find that case for $19.95 at Backcountry right now. I’m planning to get one for my Actik Core.

Items are usually more expensive in Canada, though it seems prices have dropped since summer.
@Jules
That’s why I love shopping for gear in the off-season!
Sofirn offers great value for money. Definitely worth checking out.
Nitecore’s NU-20 Classic is affordable, light, and has good battery performance, though it can be tricky to access all modes.

I’d also recommend the NU-25; it’s similarly easy to use.

Agree on the NU-20 Classic. It’s straightforward and effective.
I swear by the Fenix HM50R. It’s lightweight, comfortable, and durable—perfect for long work shifts.
The Fenix HM75R is overkill for some, but its durability and 1600 lumens make it an absolute powerhouse for serious adventurers.
I’ve been using the LHKNL Headlamp Flashlight, which offers 1200 lumens and a variety of settings. It’s also waterproof and comes at a great price on Amazon.
I’ve used both Petzl and Black Diamond. I prefer models with 350+ lumens and red light options. My latest Petzl is rechargeable and has been more convenient than I anticipated.
I’ve seen this question on Strava forums as well. There are many good brands. Consider features like battery life, weight, and whether you need a red light for preserving night vision.
