I’ve thought about it and might get a fixed blade in the future. But there’s another reason I need a folding knife that I didn’t mention before… I’m in NYC and it’s also for personal safety.
The Cold Steel Air Lite is an excellent choice for a lightweight yet robust folding knife, nearly as reliable as a fixed blade thanks to its strong lock. Don’t rely on it for self-defense though; non-lethal options like pepper spray might be more effective and safer.
I don’t know much about the specifics of different knives but I can share my experience: I have a Kershaw folding knife gifted to me years ago and I love it. I plan to use it as long as it lasts. For a fixed blade, I chose a Buck knife for motorcycle camping which has been excellent too.

What are your main uses for the knife or what do you plan to use it for?
Great question. I mainly use a knife for making feather sticks and preparing tinder when camping, especially in wet conditions. There’s also the urban aspect, since I’m based in NYC.
@Merlin
Using a knife for self-defense, especially in NYC, can be risky. It’s brutal and dangerous for both parties involved. I’d recommend a fixed blade if self-defense is a major concern, but also stress that de-escalation is usually a safer approach than engaging with a weapon.
@Cory
I’ve had to rely on a knife before, and sometimes just showing you have one is enough. I’ve learned from experience, but I agree it’s a last resort. I’d prefer a knife that’s practical for both the trails and as a last-resort self-defense tool in the city.
@Merlin
If that’s the case, take a look at Cold Steel knives. They’re durable, affordable, and intimidating enough for self-defense. Just make sure you’re aware of local laws and choose wisely to stay safe both legally and physically.
Honestly, just get a $20 stainless steel Morakniv. It’s the sharpest, strongest, most reliable, and easiest to replace knife you can find at that price point.
The SOG Trident Tigershark is the coolest knife I’ve ever owned. For something strictly for backpacking, a Swiss Army knife could also be a good pick. I got a replica online for just $9 and it’s almost as good as the genuine ones.
I’ve been using the Mini Praxis as my first ‘real’ EDC knife for the past year. It’s been very handy and reliable. I’m currently looking into the Civivi Yonder as a potential upgrade.

It’s great to hear good things about the mini praxis. It looks similar to the elementum, which I’ve also considered.
