Anyone else here use the Jetboil Zip? What are your thoughts on it? How does it compare to other options?
The Trail Scout mat is essentially a yoga mat. I would return it and go for something like the Neoloft instead. It’s been a game-changer for me!
Jetboil is a solid choice, though.

The Neoloft is a bit heavier, but wow, it’s incredibly comfortable. u/wandering_hick (Justin Outdoors) has some great YouTube videos on it.
Had one a while ago. It’s alright for what it is. The little knob is pretty awkward to use though – hard to turn on/off, especially when hot water splashes up. There’s no way to simmer, it’s either full blast or off. I’d recommend bringing a lighter just in case the igniter doesn’t work.
I would go with a more traditional pocket rocket kit and a windscreen. Since we’re here to tell you what you did wrong… lol
Return both.
The Fire Maple Petrel and Soto Windmaster combo is half the price and half the weight. If you’re looking for something even cheaper, the Campingmoon X2-DF (which is a clone of the Windmaster) works too. You’ll need the tri-flex pot stand though.
Thermarest makes great gear, but if you’re looking for a higher-end pad, the X-lite, Exped Ultra series, or Nemo Tensor series are your best bet.
Jetboil <3
Jetboil – very nice
I’ve used a Jetboil before. It’s a bit dated, but it gets the job done. Here’s my current cook system if you’re interested: Petrel Ultralight 600ml Pot with Heat Exchanger | Solo Adventures – Fire Maple
It’s cheaper, lighter, and has measurement markings in the pot.
Don’t forget to test the mat in your living room for a couple of nights to see if you like it. Since it’s REI, you can always return it if it’s not right for you.
@Heath
The Petrel is far better than a Jetboil, hands down.
Good for you! I’ve used the Trail Scout too, and while it is bulky, for the price and comfort, I can’t beat it. I switched to the lighter, more compact (yet less R value) Klymit Static V for my summer motorcycle trips, and I’m really happy with it. Anyone who tells you to spend $200 on mats probably has money to burn, but do what works for you!
