Last weekend I used the kelty cosmic synthetic 20F bag camping in the mountains and it wasn’t able to keep me warm in the middle of the night. I was looking at the Teton Celsius -25 sleeping bag. Looks like it weighs 7 pounds which is probably what makes it cheaper. I would like a bag in the $100-$300 price range and something that I can pack as well. What do you guys do you think is the best bang for my buck in this price range?
You utilized a pad with a rating of 1.3R. The ISO Temperature Rating (Comfort) for the sleeping bag is 32° / 0°C. Both must be upgraded. A pad with at least a R value close to 5 is required. Many down bags advise you must use an insulated cushion since the top of the bag is significantly more insulated than the bottom. Perhaps, but I’m not sure if synthetic is the same. However, 7 pounds seems a bit excessive. A Big Agnes 0 degree 3N1 Lost Ranger weights 3 pounds, 12 ounces, costs about $300 on campsaver.com, and $336 on REI.com.
I have no doubt that there are other light options in the $300 area.
What is your sleeping pad? It’s possible that was the issue and not the sleeping bag.
I had the Klymit static V2 inflatable ground pad. I was also sleeping wearing jeans, long socks, a light jacket, and a neck gaiter. Part of the issue could be that I keep it stored in the compression bag? But I think I’m going to need at least a 0F bag. It got down into the low 20s last weekend.
The klymit static v has a really bad r-value, I’m not sure if they’re still advertising it but it’s r-value is (as another commenter mentioned) 1.3. No sleeping bag can make up for low r value pads like that. 100-300 is enough to get a better pad, Highest recommended pads are the xtherm nxt and nemo tensor pads, but if you want to spend a bit less you can find some others.
