I am older gentleman, never been camping in my life. Thinking of going camping by myself. What’s basic gear I should take for a night or two? Something easy to set up and not to expensive either. I am in Toronto, Canada if that makes a difference. Thanks
A tent or hammock, an underquilt or sleeping pad, a sleeping bag or blanket, food and water, and clothing appropriate for the weather are all you’ll need.
Sun and bug protection are important necessities.
Good checklists are available from REI.
Thanks for that friend.
Start with an organized campground near home where you can set up next to your car. Provincial Parks are great options. You’ll need to cover shelter, sleep, and cooking basics.
- Shelter: Get a tent. Manufacturers’ sizes are tight, so consider a bigger tent. I use a 4-person tent for solo trips, and dome tents are easy to set up—just practice beforehand.
- Sleep: Use a foam sleeping pad for insulation. A sleeping bag is ideal, but blankets and pillows from home work too.
- Cooking: A 2-burner propane stove is affordable. You’ll also need cookware and utensils, or just roast over a fire. A cooler helps with perishables.
Outdoor stores like REI offer camping checklists and advice on gear.
Thank you very much this is very helpful.
Tomorrow night, I plan to attempt it for the first time as well, but I’ll be using a low-cost hammock setup that comes with a sleeping bag and tarp underneath the hammock. I carry food and water, a stove and gas canister, a headlamp, a flashlight, a pillow, and a camping folding chair, but I never bring the pillow or the chair because my hammock serves as both my sleeping shelter and my chair. I also carry a small padlock to secure the zippers, but that’s all I have in terms of lightweight gear. The heavier item I bring is my camel crown 4-person backpack.
