Anyone else's backpack liner starting to peel?

A quick fix is to use a trash bag to line your pack. Some folks use trash compactor bags because they’re durable:

This peeling issue, also known as ‘delamination,’ is pretty common with these kinds of materials.

@Riley
It’s tough for those of us who take care of our gear only for the inner lining to break down after a couple of decades. If you want to try cleaning it, use a stiff brush to scrape off as much of the lining as you can. Sometimes it comes off in big pieces, but don’t count on it.

Looks like that bag has seen a lot… maybe it’s time to let it go.

I had a similar experience with a Black Diamond backpack I loved. Eventually, it started shedding black rubber flecks on everything. I decided to let it go and get a new one. I still have the memories, but now I’ve got a clean, usable bag!

My pack did the same thing! It’s the waterproof layer flaking off, and it can get all over your gear. Lining it with a trash bag really helps keep the mess contained.

Probably not worth trying to restore. You can turn it inside out and try scrubbing it, but if it doesn’t work, you might just have to live with it or let it go.

How old is this pack? Delamination can happen with age. I had a similar issue with a Gregory pack, and they replaced it for me without much hassle.

Are you up for some scrubbing? It might take a while.

I dusted off my old backpack (it’s over 25 years old) recently, and it had a similar issue. After washing it, I managed to use it, but I don’t think the lining was as degraded as yours looks. Still, pretty impressive how well it’s held up over time!

Your pack was never truly waterproof, to be honest. It’s always best to line your clothes with pack liners. Mine doubles as an emergency blanket!

Is that the PU coating coming off? In the UK, I use Techwash on my gear, and it’s helped a lot. Have you tried a cleaner like that?

That won’t work here. Techwash is mainly for re-waterproofing coatings inside the fabric, while this is a separate layer of PU on the surface. You’d have to completely remove that layer to reapply it, which honestly isn’t worth the hassle.

Thanks for the tip. I’ll see if I can find something similar.

I had an old Adidas backpack that started falling apart but was still good for the gym and short trips. I took it to a repair shop, and they replaced the zipper for me. Might be worth checking if you can replace the damaged part!

Try scrubbing with a stiff brush and some nail polish remover. It might not be waterproof anymore, but at least it won’t shed all over everything!

I’d just go with a pack liner. Someone mentioned the Highlander ACC004 Rucksack Liner for larger packs, which could work well.

I had a pack that did the same thing. Eventually, I replaced it because it kept shedding, and I couldn’t get it clean.

Try Osprey. They have a good reputation for replacements if something goes wrong.

This one’s from L.L. Bean. I think they’d replace it too, but it’s pretty old, so I don’t feel right asking.
