I want to make sure my kids and I practice better hand hygiene while we go hiking. A foot pump-operated hose that drains water from a ground-level jug or a foot-operated tap that I could attach to a tree-hanging water reservoir would be highly practical options. Any suggestions?
Although neither suggestion is manual, you might find it interesting.
Simply twist to open, this can be used with a spigot. It costs $25 at REI or Amazon.com.
Practical portable drinking water storage can be found at PREPS Archives
This item, which costs $2 on AliExpress, is something I also like: https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256806207560431.html
It’s a pressurized bottle that uses water very effectively and lets you spray water. You can use it with any soda bottle; I have a 2L bottle. Excellent if you’re aiming to use less water.
Big fan of just a collapsible bucket/pot and a plastic measuring cup with a hole drilled into the side near the bottom opposite the handle. You fill the bucket with water and the cup sits on the rim. Fill the cup, hang it on the rim pointing outwards and wash your hands as the water drains from the hole.
The big advantage over spigot systems imo is that you don’t have to touch the spigot (that you touched with dirty fingers) again after washing your hands
Is having a squirty bottle/camp shower for rinsing not good enough? Plus some alcogel
You’re outside and fully portable so accepting that there will be shortcomings in the plumbing comes with the territory. The whole foot pump thing will just be so clunky when having someone squeeze a bottle you already have is just sensible.
Is rinsing with a camp shower or squirty bottle insufficient? In addition, certain alcogel
It comes with the territory to acknowledge that there will be plumbing issues because you’re outdoors and completely mobile. It just makes so much sense to have someone squeeze a bottle you already own; the foot pump thing will just be so awkward.
I wouldn’t backpack with it due to bulk but I have an older Nemo Helio that is awesome for basecamp or car camping
